CMI, Inc. is located in Owensboro, Kentucky and is a wholly owned subsidiary of MPD, Inc. CMI was established in 1970 in Colorado to manufacture police traffic radar. In 1975, CMI purchased Omnicron Systems which had developed infrared breath analysis instruments. CMI was purchased by Federal Signal Corp. in 1982 and took major steps in making the Intoxilyzer® 5000 the evidential breath alcohol tester of choice among U.S. state alcohol testing programs. MPD, Inc., the former Microwave Products Department of General Electric, purchased CMI in 1988 and moved its entire operation to Owensboro the next year.
In 1990, MPD purchased Lion Laboratories, plc of Barry, Wales, another worldwide leader in the breath alcohol tester marketplace and the original developer of fuel cell analysis technology. While CMI and Lion share engineering, marketing and manufacturing resources and approach the world as a single entity, products in North and South America are marketed under the CMI, Inc. banner while the Lion brand name appears on products in most other parts of the world. Combined, CMI and Lion are the largest manufacturers of breath alcohol testing instruments in the world.
Another MPD subsidiary, MPH Industries, is a leading manufacturer of police traffic safety radar and related equipment for law enforcement around the world.
In 1997, MPD, Inc. and its subsidiaries, including CMI and Lion, became employee-owned companies with no outside stockholders.
